The amount of income you can earn while receiving disability benefits in the United States depends on the specific program you are receiving benefits from. Here is some information about the two main programs that provide income to individuals with disabilities:

  1. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI): If you are receiving SSDI benefits, you may be able to work and earn income while still receiving benefits. However, there are limits on how much you can earn. In 2021, the limit is $1,310 per month for non-blind individuals and $2,190 per month for blind individuals. These limits may change in future years. If you earn more than the limit, your SSDI benefits will be reduced. However, if you are participating in the Ticket to Work program, you may be able to earn more without having your benefits reduced. You can learn more about the work incentives available under the SSDI program on the Social Security Administration’s website: https://www.ssa.gov/disability/work.html
  2. Supplemental Security Income (SSI): If you are receiving SSI benefits, your income and resources are strictly limited. In 2021, the maximum SSI benefit for an individual is $794 per month, and the maximum benefit for a couple is $1,191 per month. However, these amounts may be reduced based on your other income and resources. If you earn more than the limit, your SSI benefits will be reduced. You can learn more about the income and resource limits for SSI on the Social Security Administration’s website: https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-resources-ussi.htm

You can find more information about the regulations for both SSDI and SSI, including how to apply and what benefits you may be eligible for, on the Social Security Administration’s website: https://www.ssa.gov/. It is a good idea to consult with a qualified legal professional if you have specific questions about your rights or need guidance on how to navigate these programs.
